The Pickle Factory

Challenge: Restoring the warehouse’s distinctive mill-style windows with modern glazing presented a dual challenge: maintaining the visual rhythm of the original structure while meeting current standards for energy performance and acoustic insulation – particularly important for a mixed-use site in a busy central location.

Solution: Crystal Units delivered solar control and laminated IGUs customised with astragal and dummy spacer bars to achieve both form and function. These units preserved the building’s historic appearance while delivering high thermal and acoustic efficiency, supporting the Pickle Factory’s evolution into a premium destination for residents and businesses alike.

Project summary:

Once home to the iconic Crosse & Blackwell factory where Branston Pickle was produced, The Pickle Factory has been reimagined as a vibrant mixed-use development in the heart of Bermondsey. This landmark Victorian warehouse now blends heritage industrial charm with modern functionality, offering high-end residential and commercial spaces, including 70,000 sq ft of CAT A office space anchored by a striking triple-height glazed atrium. The design preserves the site’s character while adapting it for contemporary urban living and business use.

Working with Arkay Contractors, Crystal Units supplied specialist insulating glass units (IGUs) featuring solar control and laminated glazing to support both the performance and aesthetic requirements of the refurbished warehouse. The glazing – complete with applied astragal bars and dummy spacer bars – was meticulously designed to replicate the mill’s original fenestration patterns, ensuring a seamless visual continuity with the building’s industrial past.

Beyond residential and office uses, the development includes cafes, open squares, and creative incubator spaces, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone in Bermondsey’s ongoing transformation.
