Lots Road Power Station

Challenge: The redevelopment of the historic Lots Road Power Station — once dubbed “The Chelsea Monster” — into a high-end residential complex called for glazing that could meet rigorous performance standards without compromising the industrial character of the building. The architectural team needed large, bespoke circular window units for the top floors — units that had to echo the structure’s original fabric while delivering modern levels of insulation, solar control and safety.

Solution:

Crystal Units engineered and supplied laminated, heat-strengthened glass with a high-performance solar control coating, purpose-built for the iconic round windows. Each unit was manufactured to strict dimensional tolerances, ensuring precision fitting within the restored façade.

The specification included:

  • Laminated construction for increased safety and acoustic performance

  • Heat-strengthened glass for enhanced durability under thermal and mechanical stress

  • Solar control coating to regulate internal temperatures while maintaining optical clarity

By pairing performance glazing with architectural sensitivity, Crystal Units helped the design team preserve the bold character of the building — while meeting the stringent energy and comfort expectations of a modern residential scheme.

Project summary:

The finished windows now crown the Lots Road development, maintaining the building’s historic silhouette while enabling high-spec living behind the glass. This project reflects the broader ethos of Crystal Units: enabling ambitious architecture through technical expertise and tailored glazing solutions.

Lots Road stands as a landmark example of how legacy, luxury and glass innovation can come together — with Crystal Units right at the intersection.
