The Depot Cinema

Challenge: Large triple-glazed sliding doors were specified on this project. However, they also included a requirement to be operable by all. This meant that there were significant challenges with operating the heavy triple-glazed units.

Solution: C.U.in insulating glass with suspended film technology by Crystal Units achieves centre pane U-values as low as 0.4 W/m²K in double glazed units. C.U.in negates the need for triple glazing, eliminating the weight constraints to the frame system and the end user that triple glazing brings.

Project summary:

The Depot Cinema in Lewes is a thoughtful reinvention of a historic site – formerly the Harvey’s Brewery – transformed into a vibrant cultural venue. The project reimagined the space as a community hub for film, dining, and events, blending the past with a contemporary architectural vision. With an emphasis on transparency and connection to the outdoors, the structure features expansive glazing that immerses visitors in natural light, regardless of the season.

To meet strict thermal performance requirements while maintaining accessibility and usability, OM Double Glazing specified C.U.in insulating glass from Crystal Units. The use of our advanced suspended film technology enabled the creation of large sliding glass doors that met low U-value targets without the excessive weight of conventional triple glazing. This allowed for easier operation and reduced structural demands – while preserving the minimalist, open aesthetic.

As a result, The Depot is more than just a cinema; it is a comfortable, efficient, and inviting space for year-round cultural experiences. The glazing not only supports the building’s environmental goals but also enhances its role as a lively and inclusive social venue.
