Glass Balustrades

Bespoke Glass Balustrades for Professional Glazing Installers

Precision Manufactured. Technically Supported. Designed for Safe Installation.
Glass balustrades have become one of the defining features of modern architecture. From luxury homes and apartment balconies to commercial developments and public buildings, they create uninterrupted views while delivering the safety and durability required for demanding environments.

At Crystal Units, we manufacture bespoke toughened and laminated glass balustrades for glazing contractors, balustrade installers, façade specialists and commercial glazing companies throughout the UK.

What sets us apart isn’t simply our manufacturing capability. We help glazing companies specify the correct glass before production begins. Our experienced technical team works with installers to ensure every balustrade has the appropriate glass build-up, thickness and performance for its intended application, helping to reduce installation issues and avoid costly mistakes.

We’re more than a glass manufacturer. We’re your technical glazing partner.

Why Glazing Companies Choose Crystal Units

Every balustrade project presents its own technical challenges. Glass thickness, panel size, fixing methods, barrier loading, wind exposure and Building Regulations all need careful consideration before manufacture.

Choosing glass based solely on dimensions can lead to unnecessary delays, redesigns and expensive replacements. That’s why glazing companies work with Crystal Units at the specification stage.

Our experienced team provides guidance on glass thickness, barrier loading, wind loading and overall glass specification to ensure every panel is designed correctly before manufacture. This proactive approach helps installers reduce risk, simplify installation and deliver a premium finished project.

Alongside our technical support, you’ll benefit from dependable lead times, precision manufacturing, premium polished edges, bespoke shapes and cut-outs, reliable quality control and over 30 years of architectural glazing expertise. The result is confidence from enquiry through to installation.

What Is a Glass Balustrade?

A glass balustrade is a structural safety barrier manufactured from toughened or laminated safety glass. Unlike traditional metal or timber balustrades, glass creates an open, contemporary appearance while maintaining the required level of protection.

Glass balustrades are commonly installed on balconies, roof terraces, staircases, mezzanine floors, Juliet balconies, commercial entrances and feature architectural spaces. Every installation has different structural requirements, making correct specification essential for long-term safety and performance.

Toughened, Laminated or Heat-Soaked Glass?

One of the most common questions we receive is whether toughened glass alone is suitable for a balustrade.

The answer depends entirely on the application, fixing system, panel dimensions and loads the glass is required to withstand.

For many structural balustrade applications, toughened laminated safety glass may be required. The laminated construction uses an interlayer between the glass panes which helps retain the glass following breakage and can provide important post-breakage performance.

Different interlayer technologies are available depending on the structural requirements of the installation. Crystal Units can manufacture laminated glass using PVB interlayers and advise on higher-performance structural interlayers where required, including SentryGlas® (certification pending) and Stratobel Strong.

SentryGlas is a high-performance ionoplast interlayer offering significantly greater stiffness than conventional PVB, making it particularly relevant to demanding structural glazing applications. Stratobel Strong uses a specialist high-rigidity PVB interlayer developed to provide enhanced structural performance compared with standard laminated glass.

Rather than simply manufacturing the glass build-up requested, our technical team can help assess the application and advise on the appropriate glass thickness, laminate construction and interlayer specification before manufacture.

We can also advise on toughened glass, heat-soaked toughened glass, low iron glass and decorative finishes, helping installers get the specification right before the glass reaches site.

Structural Laminated Glass for Demanding Balustrades

Not every laminated balustrade should be treated in the same way.

The choice of glass thickness and interlayer can affect stiffness, deflection and the behaviour of the panel following glass breakage. This becomes particularly important with frameless balustrades, large-format panels, exposed balconies and other structural applications.

Alongside conventional PVB laminated glass, Crystal Units can advise on specialist structural interlayers such as SentryGlas® and Stratobel Strong where enhanced performance is required.

Our technical team can consider the complete application, including panel dimensions, fixing system, barrier loading and environmental conditions, helping glazing contractors select a suitable build-up rather than relying on a standard laminated glass specification.

This fits Crystal Units’ wider positioning particularly well: glass should be designed correctly before manufacture, not simply produced to an order. That aligns directly with the trade-first website strategy.

Decorative Laminated Balustrade Glass

I’d then introduce EVA, fabric and mesh as a smaller section:

Balustrade glass doesn’t always have to be completely clear.

For projects where the glass forms an important part of the interior or architectural design, Crystal Units can manufacture decorative laminated glass using specialist interlayers and encapsulated materials.

Options can include white or coloured interlayers, fabric and decorative mesh, allowing glazing contractors to offer something beyond conventional clear balustrade glass. EVA lamination can be particularly useful for encapsulating decorative materials within the glass, creating distinctive panels while protecting the decorative layer inside the laminate.

Combined with low iron glass, polished edges, bespoke shapes and precision processing, this gives installers greater freedom when working on premium residential, hospitality, retail and commercial projects.

NUCLR Heated Glass for Internal Balustrades

For internal balustrades, NUCLR heated glass allows the glass itself to become part of the building’s heating system. The transparent heated glass technology provides discreet radiant heat directly from the balustrade, helping create a more comfortable environment without introducing visible radiators or other heating systems that can compromise the design. It’s particularly suited to premium residential, hospitality and commercial interiors where clean architectural lines and usable space matter. Crystal Units can work with glazing installers to develop the correct NUCLR specification for the application, combining structural safety requirements with integrated heating performance for a balustrade that does more than provide a barrier.

Technical Support Before Manufacture

Many installation problems begin long before the glass reaches site.

Incorrect glass thickness, unsuitable edge detailing or overlooked structural requirements can all lead to delays, additional costs and unnecessary replacement glass.

Crystal Units works closely with installers during the design stage to eliminate these issues before manufacture begins.

We can assist with glass thickness calculations, barrier load assessments, wind loading calculations and guidance on relevant British Standards and Building Regulations. By resolving technical questions early, we help installers complete projects more efficiently while reducing the likelihood of costly call-backs.

Our aim is simple – to manufacture every panel correctly the first time.

Manufactured for a Premium Finish

Glass balustrades are highly visible architectural features, so manufacturing quality matters.

Every panel is produced with precision using high-quality processing equipment to ensure a premium finish that complements modern architecture.

We manufacture bespoke glass balustrades with polished edges, radius corners, CNC cut-outs, holes, notches, bespoke shapes and large-format panels. Low iron glass is also available where exceptional clarity is required.

Attention to detail at the manufacturing stage helps create cleaner installations and a finish your customers will notice.
