Balfron Tower
Challenge: Retrofitting a listed post-war concrete tower posed major technical constraints. The project needed to reduce thermal bridging, improve airtightness, and achieve BREEAM Excellent ratings – all while preserving the exposed concrete façade, original fenestration patterns, and slim sightlines integral to Goldfinger’s design. Integrating modern performance within these heritage parameters required delicate coordination and precision detailing.
Solution: Thermally broken aluminium window systems incorporating high-performance double glazing were introduced, delivering improved insulation, acoustic performance, and solar control. The glazing solution was carefully selected to maintain the building’s original proportions and visual rhythm, while significantly lowering heating demand and supporting the building’s long-term sustainability goals.
Project summary:
Balfron Tower, the iconic Grade II*-listed Brutalist tower designed by Ernő Goldfinger in the 1960s, has undergone a meticulous restoration to meet contemporary environmental standards while safeguarding its architectural significance. Located in Poplar, East London, the tower’s refurbishment focused on upgrading building fabric, services, and interiors without compromising its distinctive aesthetic. As part of the extensive thermal improvements, high-performance insulating glass with solar control features was installed to enhance energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
